Union County Education Information

K through High School. Most of the communities in Union County have their own school districts. Each district serves grades K-12, and each is served by its own elected school board. The La Grande School District offers a high school (grades 9-12), middle school (grades 6, 7 & 8), and four elementary schools (grades K-5). The district offers a comprehensive set of services for students with special learning problems and to students with unusual academic abilities.

The Union-Baker Education Service District (ESD) oversees special education programs designed to provide an appropriate public education for all disabled students. In addition, ESD provides a variety of integrated services for the county.

Blue Mountain Community College offers a wide variety of locations and delivery methods to meet educational needs. BMCC offers courses via distance education; online, video or ITV and access Adult Basic Department's GED, ESL and College Prep programs as well as earn a transfer degree to a 4-year university or a professional-technical degree or take non-credit personal enhancement courses.

Eastern Oregon University serves as an educational, cultural and scholarly center in La Grande. EOU is the only four-year university in the region. The quality instruction students receive at EOU is supported by a low student-to-professor ratio and easy access to professors. The enrollment has grown to more than 3,000 but the average class size remains at about 20 – the same as it was in 1929. EOU is very much a student centered university and offers research opportunities, internships, international exchanges and community service projects.

The ODS School of Dental Hygiene trains dental hygienists and works at improving the oral health of the community. The school provides basic preventative services to the public.
